Burgas is a Black Sea city and a gateway to Bulgaria's southern coastal resorts. Nesebar, Sozopol and Sunny Beach make natural onward stops.

Why go?

Burgas is a city on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, the fourth largest in the country and the second largest of its ports. It's a gateway to the southern resorts, such as Sunny Beach and the historic towns Nesebar and Sozopol. With a population of over 300,000, it offers a mix of urban amenities and beach relaxation.

Getting in

Buses and trains from different destinations in Bulgaria arrive several times per day. Burgas airport (BOJ) accepts numerous flights from all over Europe, especially in summer. Bus 15 connects the airport to the city centre for 1.50 лв. The train station is a 1930s Art Nouveau building. West Bus Station handles north and northwest connections, South Bus Station serves southbound coastal routes.

Getting around

The city centre is walkable. Public bus line 15 connects the airport and Sarafovo suburb. Taxis are available but check the tariff to avoid scams. The Sea Garden is a large park along the coast.

When to go

Summer (June-August) is the peak season with beach activities, outdoor cafes, and festivals like Bourgas Sand Fest (July-August) and Spirit of Burgas (mid-August). The International Folklore Festival is held at the end of August. The Bulgarian Dead Sea salt ponds are open daily 08:00-19:30.

Where to stay

Hotels are concentrated in the city centre and the Sea Garden area. For budget travelers, Old House Hostel offers dorms from 12 лв. Private apartments are available from 48 лв per night. The suburb Sarafovo has seaside guesthouses with easy bus access to the city.

Food and drink

Burgas has many pizza places, pubs, and Chinese restaurants. Street food like kebabs, pancakes, and hot dogs cost 2-4 лв. In summer, open-air restaurants and pubs line the Kapanite area on North Beach. Seafood is available at Kapana Seafront Fish Shack. For drinks, try Broadway and Silver Club for cocktails, or beach bars in the Sea Garden.

Things to do

Visit the Ethnographic, Archaeological, Historical, and Natural History Museums. The Sea Garden offers a huge park with sea views. Birdwatchers should go to Poda protected area (4 лв for adults). The Bulgarian Dead Sea salt ponds (5 лв) allow floating and mud baths. Sand sculptures festival and music festivals occur in summer. The Burgas Mineral Baths (Aquae Calidae) are 15 km northwest.

Safety

Burgas is generally safe but pickpocketing increases in summer. Avoid dark areas in the Sea Garden at night. Be aware of taxi scams: double-check the tariff. Exchange money at official places; the normal rate is 1.94 лв per EUR. Do not accept fruit samples from street sellers. Avoid conflicts with drunk people.

Day trips

Easily reachable day trips include the historic towns of Nesebar and Sozopol, the resort of Sunny Beach, and Nature Park Strandzha. The Burgas Mineral Baths (Aquae Calidae) are 15 km northwest. The Bulgarian Dead Sea is half-way along Atanasovsko Lake.

    A true budget place in the heart of Burgas with limited comfort and not-so-great cleanliness. Small dorms with single beds, shared bath rooms. Private rooms available. Shared kitchen. Manager/receptionist doesn't speak English and may be a bit grumpy, so be patient and get your translation app ready. In March 2021, many of the visitors were long-term tenants staying for a couple of months.
