Overview
Bukit Kayu Hitam (locals call it "Black Forest" based on its loose English translation) exists primarily as a border crossing checkpoint between Malaysia and Thailand. Most long-distance buses between the two countries use this checkpoint.

No hotels or guesthouses exist in town. Nearest overnight options are Alor Star (40 min), Hat Yai (1 hour), or Penang (2 hours).
Border
Malaysian checkpoint is here; Thai side is Sadao Immigration Checkpoint. Dannok town is immediately across the border.
Shopping
The Cergas Jaya Duty Free Shopping Complex offers liquor, cigarettes, and cosmetics. Duty-free import requires 48 hours outside Malaysia.
Transport
Bukit Kayu Hitam is a major bus checkpoint for Malaysia-Thailand routes. Taxis and motorcycle taxis are needed to get around town.
