Why Go?

Buenaventura is one of the rainiest cities in the world, receiving 6,000-7,000 mm of precipitation annually, giving it a consistently humid, tropical atmosphere. The city sits on Cascajal Island in Valle del Cauca department, making it Colombia's major Pacific port and a critical transit hub for cargo and travelers. Despite its importance as a seaport, most backpackers use it as a jumping-off point for the resort towns of Juanchaco and Ladrilleros, or the world-class diving islands of Gorgona and Malpelo. The surrounding Bahia Málaga offers humpback whale watching from July to October.

Understand

Located in the Valle del Cauca department near the western Andes cordillera, Buenaventura lies a few miles from Cali, the department's capital. Much of the city is rural with small villages scattered throughout, while the urban core concentrates on Cascajal Island. The city has a population of approximately 432,000 (2019).
