Before you go

Accommodation

Ramsgate Road has the most B&Bs. No hostel exists; camping is absent nearby. Summer weekends book out—reserve 2-3 weeks ahead for June-August. Budget options are limited; consider Margate Travelodge if Broadstairs is full.

Culture

The town is quietly proud of its Dickens connections. The Victorian centre is well-preserved, and the June Dickens Festival and August Folk Week are community-maintained traditions, not tourist fluff. Locals are friendly but not pushy.

Etiquette

No specific dress codes; beach casual is fine everywhere. Dogs are restricted on Viking Bay May-September. Tipping in restaurants is appreciated but not obligatory (round up or 10%).

Food

Cheap eats cluster on Albion St, Harbour St, and York Rd. Fish and chips, kebabs, and caffs dominate. Morelli's Gelato is a local icon. Upscale options (Stark, Kebbells) require booking. Pubs serve food daily until 9PM.

Money

Pound sterling (GBP) is the currency. Cash is fine for pubs and smaller shops, but card is accepted almost everywhere. No ATMs specifically listed, but bank branches on High St likely have them.

Safety

Broadstairs is low-crime and family-friendly. Viking Bay's steep drop requires supervision for children. Cliff paths are sturdy but wet rocks can be slippery. NHS hospital is in Margate.

Transport

Southeastern Railway runs trains from London Victoria (1hr 20min) and St Pancras via Ashford (1hr 25min). The station is central. Buses to Margate (£2.50, 15min) and Ramsgate are frequent.

Weather

Kent's east coast is one of the driest parts of the UK, but expect breezy conditions on the cliffs. Summer highs reach 20-25°C; winters are mild but grey. Pack layers and a rain jacket regardless of season.
