Overview
Bourtange is one of Europe's best-preserved star forts, a five-sided bastion built in 1592 during William I of Orange's campaign against Spanish control of Groningen. The entire village sits within the fort walls and has been meticulously restored to its mid-18th century appearance, making it feel frozen in 1782.
