Overview
Bodh Gaya is a major Buddhist pilgrimage destination. Its sacred identity centers on the Bodhi Tree, where tradition holds that Buddha Shakyamuni attained enlightenment.
Languages: English, Hindi, Tamil
Why go?
Bodh Gaya is the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site, where Buddha Shakyamuni attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. The Mahabodhi Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, houses the iconic stupa and the descendant Bodhi Tree. Surrounding it are monasteries built by Buddhist communities from Bhutan, Thailand, Tibet, Taiwan, and Japan, showcasing global spiritual diversity. Despite a rise in hustlers and scammers, stringent security preserves the serenity within the temple compound.

Safety
The town has a problem with hustlers, scammers, and beggars, especially around the temple area. The Mahabodhi Temple has enhanced security after a 2013 bombing; no laptops, mobiles, or cameras are allowed inside. Travelers should remain vigilant and avoid touts offering tours or goods. The temple compound itself is well-policed and serene.
