Berastagi is a popular weekend getaway from Medan, nestled in the Barisan mountains at 1300 m. The town is home to two famous volcanoes, Sibayak and Sinabung, and offers a cool climate, hot springs, and access to trekking.

Getting in
The nearest airport is Medan's Kuala Namu International Airport. A taxi direct takes about 3 hours. Buses from the airport go to Kabanjahe via Berastagi for Rp 40,000. From Medan, buses cost Rp 20,000 and take 1.5-2 hours, with Pt. Almasar Indonesia shop near Citra Garden 2. The road can be jammed on weekends.

Getting around
The town is walkable. Local yellow minibuses (Karya) run to Kabanjahe and nearby villages. Motorbikes are available for rent. To reach Lau Debuk Debuk hot springs, catch a yellow KT minibus for Rp 6,000 or walk two hours on a jungle path.

When to go
Berastagi has a tropical highland climate, with temperatures averaging 23°C year-round. The rainy season (October to January) brings frequent fog and cooler evenings. Weekends are busy with local tourists. A light jacket is useful.

Food and drink
Local specialties include babi panggang karo (grilled pork with blood sauce and cassava leaves), saksang, and ikan mas arsik. Food tents along the main street offer Indonesian dishes like Ikan Bakar and Bandrek (spicy tea with milk). Chinese restaurants and cafes serve good coffee from the Karo highlands. For a local experience, try tuak (palm wine) at a tuak house.

Things to do
Climb Mount Sibayak (Rp 10,000 local, Rp 25,000 foreign; guide recommended). Soak in Lau Debuk Debuk hot springs (Rp 5,000-10,000, open all hours). Visit Taman Alam Lumbini, a large Buddhist temple complex with a replica of Shewadgon Pagoda (free, donations welcome). Explore Gundaling hill for volcano views (Rp 20,000 for skyview). For families, Mikie Funland theme park (Rp 100,000, weekends only). Waterfalls like Two Colors waterfall require guided treks.

Safety
Mount Sinabung has been erupting frequently since 2013; check with local authorities before attempting climbs. The area around Sinabung may be restricted. For treks like Mount Sibayak and Two Colors waterfall, a guide is strongly recommended due to slippery, confusing paths. Petty crime is not highlighted, but usual precautions apply.

Day trips
Day trips include Gundaling hill for volcano views, Taman Alam Lumbini temple complex, and the fruit market. Nearby Kabanjahe can be reached by minibus (Rp 5,000, 20 min). For longer day trips, Medan (1.5-2 hr bus) and Lake Toba (5 hr via public transport or 4 hr by chartered taxi) are possible but require an early start.

Etiquette
At Taman Alam Lumbini, a dress code applies, and alcohol and cigarettes are forbidden. Bargaining is expected at the fruit market. When chewing betelnuts, it's a local practice but can be messy.

From Berastagi, common onward destinations include Medan (frequent buses Rp 20,000), Lake Toba/Parapat (about 5 hours via public transport with 3 changes, or charter a minivan for Rp 500,000), and Bukit Lawang (best reached via Medan). For Samosir, take a minibus to Kabanjahe (Rp 5,000), then bus to P. Siantar (Rp 25,000, 3 hr), then another bus to Parapat (Rp 15,000, 1 hr) and ferry to Samosir.

Grand Mutiara Hotel
A big five-star hotel just besides Mikie Holiday. It's a complete opposite of bustling Mikie Holiday (due to its nearby Funland), the mood here is peaceful. If you want seclusion, this is the place.

Green Garden Hotel
A large hotel by Sumatran standards, with one main building facing the main road (reception and restaurant are here) and three detached buildings encircling the swimming pool. 3-star plus. Rooms have hot showers. No AC in the ground-floor room, but there was a TV set with several Indonesian programs. Large dining hall; seems to be popular for family parties and group meetings. A rather basic breakfast is included in the room price.

Located at the historic site of Djakarta Lloyd resort house (old Dutch colonial resort), dated from 1922. It is nestled on top of a small hill with nice view and breezy wind. Next to old Bukit Kubu park. This hotel is excellent for budget traveler. Usually only open on weekends and public holidays. Will also open for group booking on weekdays.

Hotel Sibayak Internasional
A four-star property on the road leading up to Gundaling Hills which is the scenic point for viewing the two volcanoes : Sibayak and Sinabung. The hotel has 112 rooms divided into several types including cottages. Facilities include heated swimming pool, restaurant, lounge, pub, karaoke and business center with internet access. The decor is mostly wooden with ornamental colours of the local Batak tribe. It is the only starred-hotel within walking distance (5 minutes) of the traditional fruits and vegetables market of Berastagi. A good discount on the already low published rate is readily given if you ask for it, barring peak holiday seasons of Muslim New Year or Christmas-New Year.
