Overview
Bawean is a small volcanic island 150 km north of Surabaya in the Java Sea, known for its "island of 99 hills" terrain and the critically endangered Bawean deer found nowhere else. The name means "sunlight exists" in Sanskrit, said to have been exclaimed by shipwrecked sailors spotting clear skies after stormy seas.
