Founded in 1820 as an English settler town named after Lord Bathurst, the colonial secretary. The Pig and Whistle (est. 1832) is South Africa's oldest licensed pub and a National Monument.

Transport
Bathurst has no public transport; visitors need their own vehicle or arrange transfers from Port Alfred. The town is a 10-minute drive from Port Alfred along R67.
