Overview
Batalha exists almost entirely because of its magnificent Mosteiro da Batalha (Batalha Monastery), a UNESCO World Heritage Site begun in 1386 to commemorate Portugal's victory over Castile at the nearby Battle of Aljubarrota. The monastery showcases Portugal's finest Late Flamboyant Gothic architecture, later enriched with Manueline-style flourishes—most famously the unfinished chapels with their intricate stone lacework.
