Overview
Batad is perhaps the finest village for experiencing the Ifugao Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site carved into the Cordillera mountains over 2,000 years ago. With fewer than 1,500 inhabitants and no motorized vehicles, the village offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Ifugao life where rice cultivation remains central to culture.

Before you go
Connectivity
Expect no mobile signal and minimal WiFi. Inform family and work that you may be unreachable for days. Charge all devices at guesthouses when power is available.
Etiquette
Ask before photographing locals. Tipping guides and guesthouse hosts is appreciated. Carrying a small bottle of gin can help with negotiations for souvenirs. Respect the rice terraces—stick to paths to avoid damaging the ancient irrigation system.
Money
No ATMs exist in Batad. Bring sufficient cash from Banaue where you can withdraw at BPI or rural banks. Prices are quoted in Philippine Pesos.
Packing
Bring comfortable hiking shoes, a headlamp for night, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle. Cash for guides and tips is essential. A small flashlight helps on paths at night.
Transport
Jeepneys run from Banaue to Batad twice in the morning and once at 3PM. Tricycles can be arranged for up to PHP 600 but negotiate for PHP 50-200 for return trips. No vehicles exist within Batad itself.
Weather
Mountain weather is cool year-round with temperatures dropping at night. Rain gear is essential even in dry season as mist rolls in quickly. The terraces are most photogenic when flooded in April-May.
