Overview

Batac is a lean but historically loaded city in Ilocos Norte — birthplace of the Aglipayan church, hometown of revolutionary general Artemio Ricarte, and the seat of Marcos family legacy. The 2007 cityhood makes it relatively young as cities go, but its roots run to 1587 Augustinian founding.

Before you go

Connectivity

Mobile coverage (Globe, Smart) is adequate in Batac. WiFi is limited to some pension houses and restaurants; do not expect reliable connectivity for remote work.

Culture

Batac is deeply connected to the Marcos family and the Aglipayan church. Approach both topics with cultural sensitivity — curiosity is fine, but overt criticism of Marcos-era policies will alienate most residents.

Food

Batac empanada is the culinary must-try. Best at the riverside food hall near Immaculate Conception Parish — arrive before noon as stalls sell out.

Money

Cash is king in Batac. No large ATMs in the city center; bring sufficient pesos from Laoag or use银行的 ATM there before heading to Batac.

Transport

Tricycles dominate within Batac; jeepneys and buses on Route 2 connect to Laoag, Paoay, and Vigan. Laoag Airport is 17km north with flights to Manila.
