Overview

Barrackpore is India's oldest cantonment town, best known as the birthplace of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 where Mangal Pandey fired the first shot against British rule. The town holds significant historical weight while remaining a working-class Bengali suburb popular with Kolkata residents for its riverside restaurants serving authentic Kolkata biryani.
