Overview
Barra is a small, Catholic island in the Outer Hebrides with a population of about 1,200, where two-thirds speak Gaelic but everyone speaks English. The main village is Castlebay, named for the seat of Clan MacNeil on a rock in the bay.

Predominantly Catholic; fewer Sunday restrictions than other Hebridean islands. Gaelic spoken but English universal.

Safety
Beach airport: clear area when siren sounds. Beware of bull on golf course.
