Overview
Barentsburg is a living relic of the Cold War: a Russian settlement on Norwegian-administered Svalbard where about 300 coal miners continue working in one of the northernmost inhabited places on Earth. The town feels frozen in time with Soviet-era slogans painted on hillsides, a massive Lenin statue, and apartment blocks marked with communist symbols.
