Overview
Banská Štiavnica is a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving one of Europe's most complete examples of a medieval mining town. The compact old town centers on Holy Trinity Square, surrounded by Renaissance burgher houses, while the surrounding hills hide an elaborate 60-lake hydro-system built in the 16th-19th centuries to power mining machinery.
