Overview
Banagher sits at the western edge of County Offaly where the Grand Canal meets the River Shannon, making it a gateway for waterway exploration. The town grew in the 19th century as an inland port when the canal linked Dublin to the Shannon, though railways later caused its decline.

Shannonbridge is the main base for boat hire with Cruise Ireland, Silver Line Cruisers, and Locaboat operating day trips and extended charters on the Shannon.
Connectivity
Three 5G covers Banagher, Cloghan, Ferbane. Eir has the widest rural coverage. Vodafone coverage is limited to Ferbane only.
History
Leap Castle dates from 1490s and is linked to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Clonfert Cathedral has Ireland's oldest active RC church built in 1414.
Money
Ferbane has the only ATM in the area. Ferbane Centra opens daily 8AM-8PM. Carry sufficient cash as rural establishments may not accept cards.
Transport
Bus 906 runs twice daily weekdays connecting Banagher to Birr, Shinrone, Roscrea and Templemore. Routes 840 and 850 provide connections throughout Offaly. Bridges across the Shannon are limited to Portumna, Banagher, and Shannonbridge.
