Overview
Baiona is a historic Galician coastal town of 12,500 residents that famously welcomed the storm-tossed caravel La Pinta on 1 March 1493 — the first Spanish mainlanders to hear of Columbus's discovery of the New World. Today it is primarily a tourist resort on the Atlantic coast, 20 km south of Vigo, offering a relaxed alternative to larger Galician cities with a replica of La Pinta in the harbour, medieval Monterreal Castle ramparts to stroll, and access to the Cies Islands archipelago 10 km north.
