Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile signal is unreliable in the deep desert. Some cafes and hotels in Bawiti have WiFi but don't expect high speeds.
Money
Currency is Egyptian Pound (LE). Cash is preferred for small purchases. ATMs may be limited in Bawiti—bring sufficient cash from Cairo.
Safety
Standard desert precautions: carry water, inform someone of plans, travel in convoy for remote areas. Check Egypt travel advisories for current security information.
Transport
No airport or railway; access is by road from Cairo (370 km, 4-5 hours). Local transport requires a vehicle—rent one with driver or join hotel-organized safaris.
Water
All water is fossil water from the bedrock aquifer—a non-renewable resource. Use sparingly and drink only bottled water.
Weather
Hot desert climate: 40°C+ in summer, around 10°C in winter. Virtually no rainfall. Best visited October-April.
