Overview
Bagenalstown (Muine Bheag) is a small County Carlow market town with an improbable history: local landowner Walter Bagenal (1670-1745) dreamed of modelling it on Versailles as an 18th-century power base away from dirty, dangerous Dublin. The grandiose vision never materialised, but visitors can explore ruins of Norman castles, stroll along the Barrow river, and use the town as a base for exploring the medieval glories of nearby Kilkenny and Carlow.
