Overview
Ávila is a fortified medieval city 120 km northwest of Madrid, famous for its remarkably complete 11th-14th century walls forming a 2.5-km loop around the old town. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, it preserves a compact old centre with Romanesque churches, a Gothic cathedral embedded in the walls, and the birthplace of St Teresa of Ávila.
