Avakas Gorge

Chart 7239 Atlas coordinate chart

Overview

Avakas Gorge is Cyprus's most dramatic natural hiking experience: a 3-km canyon carved by the Avgas River through limestone, narrowing to just 2-3 m at its tightest. The gorge stays pleasantly cool even in summer since no direct sunlight reaches the bottom, making it a refreshing escape from coastal heat.

Before you go

Packing

Bring water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear. No facilities exist at the gorge itself.

Safety

Do not enter if the path is closed due to high water. Wear sturdy shoes; the riverbed is slippery and uneven.

Transport

Drive via Agios Georgios Pegeias or Pano Arodes. Gravel roads are passable with normal cars. Parking is free at the car park 1 km before the gorge entrance.

Weather

Best visited late summer through autumn when the stream is low. Avoid after heavy rain and in spring when water levels rise dangerously.
