Overview
Athy is a quiet market town in County Kildare, 72 km southwest of Dublin, long a garrison settlement on the River Barrow. It makes an easy day trip from Dublin or an overnight stop on the way south, offering White's Castle, the Shackleton Museum, and river cruises.

Athy dates to the 2nd century; White's Castle was built in 1417. Ernest Shackleton was born near here at Kilkea.

Transport
Trains from Dublin Heuston take 45 min (€10 single). Bus 130 from Naas runs 3-4 times daily. Town centre is 200 m west of the station.
