Overview
Arbroath is a compact Scottish coastal town with a population of 23,500, best known for three things: its impressive ruined red sandstone abbey, the world-famous Arbroath Smokies (EU-protected smoked haddock), and the historic Declaration of Arbroath signed in 1320, one of the first documented assertions of Scottish independence. The town makes a convenient stop between Dundee and Aberdeen, with sandy beaches southwest and dramatic sandstone cliffs northeast.
