Overview
Aosta is a compact Alpine city where Roman history meets mountain recreation. Founded by Marcus Terentius Varro in 25 BC as Augusta Praetoria Salassorum for 3,000 retired veterans, the town preserves one of Italy's most complete Roman grids.

Activities
Roman ruins (Aosta Archeologica ticket, €10) are the main sight. Pila ski resort 15 minutes away by cable car.
Food
Restaurants often close 2pm-7pm. Fixed-price menus (menu turistico) are economical. Look for Valdostana dishes and Fontina cheese.
Money
Italy uses euros. ATMs widely available. Keep restaurant receipts as police occasionally check.
Transport
Aosta railway station is just south of town centre. Trains run hourly to Ivrea for Turin connections. Savda buses serve Turin (3 daily, 2 hours).
Weather
Alpine climate with cold winters (ski season) and mild summers for hiking. Mountain weather changes rapidly.
