Aojiang offers an authentic slice of working-class Zhejiang life far from China's tourist circuits. With a population over 200,000 but still considered countryside, the town preserves traditional Wenzhou dialect and food culture that locals say is disappearing elsewhere.

Mobile data and WiFi are widely available in hotels and restaurants. SIM cards from Chinese carriers work throughout the area.
Food
Seafood dominates local cuisine; point-and-pick lunch buffets (10:30-12:00, 17:00-18:30) offer excellent value. Night BBQ with red tents is superb. Western food is extremely limited.
Language
Wenzhou dialect (Wenzhounese) is spoken here with pronunciation distinct from the standard Wenzhou city. Mandarin is understood but English is rare except at the International Hotel.
Money
Cash is essential in Aojiang, especially for markets, street food, and small establishments. Credit cards are rarely accepted outside the International Hotel.
Safety
Disco bars can be rowdy with occasional fights. Standard urban precautions apply. The area is generally safe for travelers.
Transport
No city buses; taxis charge a flat ¥10 anywhere in the city center. Tricycle taxis (sān lún chē) are also available for shorter trips.
