Before you go
Accommodation
Limited lodging in Andechs itself. Hotel zur Post is the main option. Most visitors base themselves in Munich and make Andechs a day trip.
Beer
The monastery brewery has been operating for over a thousand years. Beer is served from oak barrels in the Schankstube pub in 1-liter steins. The Doppelbock is particularly strong. Beer tastes best on-site—do not expect bottled versions to compare.
Crowds
Weekends and Bavarian holidays bring heavy crowds to the monastery and beer halls. Weekday visits are significantly quieter and more pleasant.
Food
Bräustüberl serves massive Schweinshaxe and other Bavarian dishes in a smorgasbord style. Bring your own extra food is common practice. Budget €15-30 for a hearty meal with beer.
Transport
S-Bahn S8 from Munich to Herrsching takes about 50 minutes. Bus line 951 (€2.20 one way) connects Herrsching to Andechs. Do not drive if you plan to drink the renowned monastery beer.
