Things to do

The main attraction is the Golden Temple Complex (free, open 24/7), where you can join the community meal (langar) and even stay overnight in the dorm. Jallianwala Bagh (free, 6AM-6PM) is a memorial to the 1919 massacre, with bullet holes visible. Other sights include Gobindgarh Fort (₹100-800, 10AM-10PM), Baba Atal Rai Tower (free viewpoint), and the psychedelic Mata Temple. Don't miss the flag lowering ceremony at Wagah border and the Amritsar Heritage Walk. At the Golden Temple's Central Sikh Museum (free), learn about Sikh history. For learning, the temple's library offers books on Sikhism for free or little cost.

Food and drink

Amritsar is famous for Amritsari Kulcha, a tandoor-baked flatbread served with chickpeas, often eaten for breakfast. Lassi, a yogurt-based drink, is a local favourite. The Golden Temple's community kitchen (langar) serves free meals 24/7. Budget eateries include New Punjabi Rasoi (meals ₹40-60) and Kesar da Dhaba for Punjabi food. For fish, try Moolchand Fish Shop (about ₹50).
