Overview
Aluva is a historic commercial town on the banks of the Periyar River in Kerala's Ernakulam district. The town is famous for its massive Shivarathri festival, which draws thousands from across Kerala and India to the riverside Shiva temple.

Aluva Shivarathri in February-March is the largest cultural fair in Kerala, drawing thousands. Book accommodation early during this period.

Vegetarian South Indian food is abundant and cheap—₹50 for a full breakfast at Muthalali Dosa Shop. Shivarathri festival brings extensive street food.

Cash is widely accepted. Use State Bank of Travancore or Federal Bank branches near the station. Cards accepted at larger hotels and restaurants only.
Transport
Aluva railway station has good connections. Autorikshaws charge ₹15/km; buses cost ₹7 per 3 km. The town is 12 km from Cochin Airport.
Weather
Visit October-March for best weather. Avoid monsoon (May-September) when the Shiva temple submerges. Summer shows the temple clearly.
