Overview
Ålesund is the gateway to Norway's most iconic northwestern fjords, including Geirangerfjord and Hjørundfjord, with the dramatic Sunnmøre Alps as backdrop. The city stands out for its uniform Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture, rebuilt after a catastrophic 1904 fire that destroyed the wooden town.
