Overview
Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park is a wild mountain wilderness in the Catalan Pyrenees with nearly 200 glacial lakes and peaks rising to 3017m at Besiberri Sud. The park welcomed over 580,000 visitors in 2024, drawn by spectacular alpine scenery, challenging treks between mountain refuges, and the dramatic twin peaks of the Encantats reflected in Sant Maurici lake.

Before you go
Access
Entry to the park is free; transport to trailheads uses 4x4 taxis from parking areas (from €5.75 per adult). Alsa buses connect surrounding towns to Barcelona and Lleida.
Accommodation
Options range from campings (€15-25) to mountain refuges (€20-40 per night) to hotels. Book refuges in summer. Villages: Llavorsí, Vielha, Baqueira-Beret, Vall de Boí, Sort.

Nearly 200 glacial lakes, peaks to 3017m, 40,852 hectares. Trekking between refuges, Romanesque churches in Vall de Boí, medieval castles, cable car to Estany Gento.
Safety
Mountain weather is unpredictable; wear appropriate boots, warm layers, and rain gear. Go with companions and assess fitness before treks. In winter, extreme avalanche risk. Emergency: 112.
Weather
Cold mountain climate with mean temperatures of 0-5°C; upper areas rarely above 0°C in winter. Precipitation 900-1300mm annually, mostly as snow. Weather changes abruptly at any time of year.
